The story unfolds in Athens and a nearby enchanted forest. Hermia loves Lysander but is betrothed to Demetrius. Her friend Helena is in love with Demetrius. The lovers' plans become complicated when they enter the woods, where the fairy king Oberon and his queen Titania reign.
