In 1938, Lucien Cordier, a pathetic and humiliated police chief in a French African colony village populated mostly by blacks with some whites, decides he wants a clean slate in life. He is universally disrespected, even by his wife Huguette, and never arrests anyone despite witnessing dirty tricks. One day, however, he embarks on a Machiavellian campaign of vengeance against those who have humiliated him, turning into an 'exterminating angel'.
