Cousin Bette is a lonely seamstress who tries to insert herself into the lives of her wealthy brother-in-law, Baron Hulot, and niece Hortense after her sister's death. When she fails to gain their affection, she befriends and supports an aspiring sculptor named Marie Anne. However, Marie Anne falls in love with Hortense instead, leaving Bette bitter. Seeking revenge, Bette enlists the help of a famous courtesan, Jenny Cadine, to destroy the lives of those who have wronged her.
