In early 1920s Amsterdam, Han van Meegeren, a young and talented painter, struggles to gain recognition from art critics who dismiss his work as old-fashioned copies of Rembrandt and Vermeer's styles. In a bold move to prove them wrong, he creates a fake Vermeer painting and manages to sell it as an authentic piece. Rather than revealing the truth, Han continues to profit from his forgeries, becoming increasingly entangled in lies.
