In 1838, Elisabeth agrees to bear a child for an anonymous English landowner who promises to pay her father's debt in return. Seven years later, she is hired as a governess on a remote Sussex estate. It is here that she discovers the girl she is meant to care for, Louisa, is actually her own daughter from that arrangement.
