Historia

In 1925, Gabriela, a poor, uneducated, yet charming woman becomes cook, mistress, and then wife of Nacib, a bar owner in Ilhéus, a small Brazilian coastal town run by the local colonels.

Resumen

In 1925 Ilhéus, a quaint coastal town governed by powerful colonels, Gabriela, an uneducated yet captivating woman, becomes cook and lover to Nacib, a charismatic bar owner played by Marcello Mastroianni. Their passionate affair blossoms as Gabriela's sensuality enchants Nacib, but his jealousy grows with the attention she garners. Seeking advice from his friend Tonico (played by Cantafora), Nacib marries Gabriela in a misguided attempt to curtail the admiration. However, Nabci's efforts to mold Gabriela into a more respectable figure prove futile; their relationship crumbles when he discovers her with Tonico. As Ilhéus evolves politically and Nacib transforms, so does his perspective on Gabriela. The town's modernization mirrors their rekindled affair, culminating in Gabriela resuming her role as Nacib's mistress, reflecting the changing dynamics of their love story.
