Kuutamolla follows Iiris Vaara, a Helsinki bookstore owner who turns 30 and becomes disillusioned with romance due to her movie-influenced ideals and past disappointing relationships. She meets young film director Marko, who initially seems perfect as he shares her love for films. They embark on an intense relationship but soon realize that their conversations about movies become repetitive, leading them to strip away the romantic illusions they had about each other. After Marko leaves Iiris, she falls into depression. Meanwhile, Iiris's best friend Laura leaves her husband Sami and two children for her ex, which brings Iiris and Sami together for mutual consolation.
