He meets Líza, a German woman in Prague, whom he believes could be his ticket to wealth. However, things don't go as planned when war breaks out. Jan is eventually arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison. After his release, he goes into semi-exile in a deserted village near the German border, reflecting on his past life and experiences.
