Jay Austin, now a civilian police detective in San Francisco, previously served under Lieutenant Colonel Alan Caldwell in the military police. Their relationship was strained due to a disagreement over handling a drunk driving case years ago, which led Austin to leave the military police. They are forced to work together again when a series of murders that cross jurisdictions come up for investigation. Adding tension to their reunion is the fact that Austin is now dating Caldwell's daughter.
