In New Orleans' Storyville district around 1917, prostitute Hattie lives with her 12-year-old daughter Violet at Madame Nell's brothel. Photographer Ernest J. Bellocq becomes acquainted with both Hattie and Violet during his frequent visits to the brothel. When Violet is brought into prostitution by Madame Nell, she loses her virginity in an auction to a wealthy client for $400. Following this, Hattie marries a rich client and moves to Saint Louis, leaving Violet behind at the brothel. Violet decides to marry Bellocq and moves into his house.
