Paul Snider, a narcissistic hustler with dreams of grandeur, meets Dorothy Stratten while she's working at a Dairy Queen. He becomes infatuated with her and sees potential in her beauty to launch them both into fame. Under his guidance, Dorothy becomes the August 1979 Playboy Playmate and later the Playmate of the Year. Their relationship progresses until Paul begins to feel sidelined as Dorothy's acting career takes off and she mingles with more influential people like Hugh Hefner and director Aram Nicholas. Unable to carve out his own life without using Dorothy's name, which she becomes reluctant to provide, Paul's jealousy grows. The film follows their relationship trajectory until its tragic end.
