Camille, a professor at a Protestant college engaged to Martin, another professor and respected minister, feels stirrings of uncertainty about her life when she meets Petra, an acrobat in a circus troupe. Camille is drawn to Petra's free spirit despite their different worlds. After the death of her dog, Camille begins to question her relationship with Martin, realizing that her love for him may not be as deep as she thought. She and Petra meet again, and they spend a night together at the circus where Petra performs. When Martin finds out about this, he's shocked and argues with Camille. Distraught, Camille goes to bury her dog in the snow and ends up falling asleep.
