Historia

Wil, a Chinese-American lesbian surgeon living in Manhattan, has been secretly dating Vivian Shing, the daughter of her boss at the hospital. Wil's traditionalist mother, Ma, who was previously banished from Flushing, Queens for getting pregnant out of wedlock, unexpectedly arrives at Wil's apartment. Ma's presence disrupts Wil's personal life and causes tension between them due to their differing views on love and relationships. To please her grandfather and prove that she is not a lesbian, Wil tries to find a Chinese bachelor for Ma to marry. Meanwhile, Wil continues her secret relationship with Vivian.

Resumen

Directed by Alice Wu in 2004, 'Saving Face' is a romantic comedy-drama that explores the cultural conflict between traditional Chinese values and Western modernity through the lens of a lesbian romance. The film follows Wil, a successful surgeon navigating her identity as a Chinese-American lesbian, and her mother Ma, who embodies traditional Chinese norms. With its intersectional exploration of cultural differences, homophobia, and the challenges of coming out, 'Saving Face' offers a unique perspective on love and family dynamics.
