Historia

Desert Flower follows the life of Waris Dirie from her childhood as a nomad in Somalia to her rise as an international supermodel and UN spokeswoman against female genital mutilation (FGM). Sold into marriage at age 13, she escapes her brutal husband and wanders alone across the African desert. Eventually, she reaches London with no money or family but finds refuge with a British diplomat's family who take her in. There, she learns English and begins working as a maid. Dirie discovers modeling while accompanying her employer to a fashion show; she signs with an agency and becomes a successful international model. Despite her fame, she continues to advocate against FGM and becomes the UN spokeswoman for its eradication.

Resumen

Directed by Sherry Hormann in 2009, Desert Flower is a biographical drama based on Waris Dirie's autobiography of the same name. The film explores themes of resilience, identity, and women's rights as it traces Dirie's journey from her traditional nomadic life in Somalia to her transformation into a global supermodel and activist against female genital mutilation (FGM). Although born into poverty and subjected to brutal practices like FGM, Dirie's determination and courage lead her to break free from her circumstances and raise awareness about the devastating effects of this cultural practice.
