After being traumatized by his experiences during World War I, Georges Laffont leaves France to travel to West Africa in the early 1920s. He accompanies Diofo, an artist and fellow war survivor, recruiting villagers as labor for plantations in Ghana along the way. However, this venture proves unsuccessful, leading Georges back to Nantes where his brother Marcel and mother reside. After the war, Georges struggles to find his place and forms a tumultuous relationship with Helene, a sign language teacher. He ultimately attempts to heal the wounds he's caused within his family.
