Teresa Madruga, a Swiss sailor who jumped ship in Lisbon due to his discontent with the noisy engine room, rented a room and led a solitary life while writing letters to his lover back home. He documented his experiences on 8mm film rolls which he sent to her along with his letters detailing the whiteness of the city and his feelings of solitude and emptiness. Despite maintaining this long-distance relationship, Madruga also formed a romantic bond with Rosa, a local chambermaid. This dual relationship led to complications when his Swiss lover grew upset upon discovering it.
