Marianne Mardi, born during World War II in Lapland to a reindeer herding family, had an unusual encounter with a German fighter pilot named Hans who crashed nearby. The two developed feelings for each other during his convalescence. Years later, Hans returned and persuaded Laila to move to Helsinki to start a modeling career. However, their relationship soured, and Laila's life spiraled downwards in the big city.
