"Sharon Mitchell has led a life straight out of a Paul Thomas Anderson-directed tragicomedy film, akin to Boogie Nights, but with herself as the leading lady during the '70s and '80s Golden Age of Porn. Her notable works include Sexcapades (1983), Night Hunger (1983), and D.O.D.: Dick of Death (1985). She ventured into mainstream films such as Night of the Juggler (1980) and Class of Nuke 'Em High Part II: Subhumanoid Meltdown (1991), mirroring many porn stars of her time who made similar transitions. However, this era also brought personal struggles; Mitchell developed a drug addiction and contracted multiple sexually transmitted diseases, which she overlooked in pursuit of her career until an obsessed fan assaulted her in 1996.
Post-retirement from adult films and drugs, Mitchell earned master's and doctoral degrees from an unaccredited institution. She established the Adult Industry Medical Health Care Foundation to test and protect performers against HIV and other STDs, earning the moniker "Dr. Mitchell" among on-screen sex workers. Despite maintaining a presence in nude appearances in movies like Thinking XXX (2004), American Swing (2008), and 9to5: Days in Porn (2008), her foundation faced closure in 2011 due to licensing issues, inadequate care, and a data breach exposing the STD status of over 12,000 performers.
